I used to think a lot about this issue. But it just became clear. Even I am a beginner to advanced level of Economics. So here I offer my understanding of the subject, backed up by a lot of reading and reasoning. The constant increase in prices is called inflation. Inflation has many causes: 1. Cost pressure. 2. Demand pull. 3. Money supply. Currency is a narrower term than money. Money has two basic functions that it must perform: 1. Effective medium of exchange. 2. Value store. The quantity and quality of goods and services that a given currency can buy indicates its purchasing power, which is nothing but the value of money. The money supply has to maintain a pace that matches the level of economic growth in the country. With increasing production, it is necessary to provide more money in the economy in order to realize production and avoid a cash crunch. But when the money supply increases without any increase in production, it simply means that more currency is available to buy the same category of goods. This increase may occur for various reasons. Imagine for a moment that the barter system is spinning. No one trusts a paper note. This leads to economic phenomena of the interdependence of needs.
